When ERCP is Needed
Doctors may recommend ERCP for conditions such as:
- Gallstones in the bile duct – Stones can block bile flow and cause severe pain or infection.
- Jaundice due to blockage – When bile cannot flow properly, the skin and eyes may turn yellow.
- Pancreatic duct problems – ERCP helps diagnose and treat narrowing or blockage in the pancreatic duct.
- Bile duct infection (Cholangitis) – A serious infection that needs immediate treatment.
- Bile duct strictures or tumors – ERCP helps in identifying and managing abnormal narrowing or growths.
What Happens During ERCP?
During the procedure, a thin flexible tube called an endoscope is passed through the mouth into the stomach and small intestine. A special dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts, and X-ray images are taken.
If blockage or stones are found, treatment can often be done immediately during the same procedure, such as:
- Removing stones
- Placing stents
- Opening blocked ducts
Benefits of ERCP
- No major surgery required
- Faster recovery compared to surgery
- Immediate relief from blockage and pain
- Helps prevent serious complications
- Short hospital stay in many cases
